An homage to Herman Melville’s novel Moby Dick, Living Structures’ Leviathan takes its audience through an adventurous journey involving spatial transformation, large installation, physical theatre and original soundscape.

Investing in striking moments of the story, Living Structures approaches the telling of this tale inspired by the monochrome colours, gemoetric shapes and architectural functionality of Russian Constructivism.

These showings are the outcome of a six week research and development period at Trinity Buoy Wharf, in which Living Structures have worked alongside a team of long-term and new collaborators. The opportunity to work with an audience as part of our process is crucial. If you would like to take part in these initial showings, click here for tickets. Each performance will be followed by a Q&A session and drinks reception with the artists. Your feedback will help us move forward towards our official premiere in 2012.

Living Structures are excited to announce that this summer the company will be embarking on a period of research and development for our new show, Leviathan!

Inspired by Herman Melville’s novel, Moby Dick, Leviathan tells the classic story of a power-crazed captain and his crew, incited to abandon their simple duties on board, manipulated to join an obsessive hunt in pursuit of an enemy whose very existence is uncertain…

Melville’s tale addresses the predicament that individuals face when their duties and ideals clash, and our Leviathan questions the meaning of responsibility, obligation and integrity.

A large-scale immersive performance with striking visuals and haunting music, Leviathan invites its audience to become an active part of the ship’s crew, reliving their adventures and ultimately faced with the choice to submit, or fight to keep one’s morals intact.

Following the R&D Leviathan will premiere in 2012, but there will be a few opportunities to join Living Structures’ new show as audience for our development performances this summer. Tickets will be very limited however, and details of their release will be announced very soon, so join our mailing list here to be the first to know!

CHARLES SPENCER, THE TELEGRAPH ★★★★

Selling out in the first couple of weeks of general release we added more dates to the run and they sold out within a few hours. The press seemed to go crazy for the experience and our collective’s public profile has been hoisted nationally and beginning to raise internationally with a feature by Ruth Rach on DeutschlandFunk Radio with Cart Macabre’s director Klaus Kruse. Huge thank you to Hamish Jenkinson, Vivienne Clavering, Claire Symonds, James Hadley, Clare Goddard, Kevin Spacey, Colin Marsh, Douglas McJannet, Nick Phibbs, Lucy Faulks, Catrin John, Edel McGrath, Andy Franzkowiak, Mary Jane Edwards, Michael Smythe and all Old Vic volunteers.

We also want to particularly thank:

George Ellison – Freelance mask, prop and puppet fabricator – george_ellison85@yahoo.co.uk

Isobel Dunhill – Freelance set and costume designer – dunhill66@googlemail.com

for their huge talented contributions to the costumes and props of Cart Macabre. Thank you George and Izzy!!

Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances the remainder of the run at the Old Vic Tunnels had to be cancelled but we intend to perform Cart Macabre again at some point in the future – we will keep you posted! Thank you so much to the huge amount of people who wrote to us enquiring that we were alright and trying to find new tickets☺!

As soon as we perform Cart Macabre again everyone on our mailing list will be the first to know where to get tickets.

We are currently planning our new show entitled ‘LEVIATHAN’ a site specific immersive performance based on Hermann Melville’s Moby Dick… aiming to premiere in 2012! More info to follow…!

Excitingly, with the generous support of Air Edel recording studios and with very special thanks to Maggie Rodford and Helen Yates (www.air-edel.co.uk) we were able to make our first studio album of all the songs from Cart Macabre!

“VERITY STANDEN’S LUSCIOUSLY ARRANGED A CAPELLA MUSIC IS ONE OF THE WONDERS OF A TRIP WHICH MAKES YOU LISTEN WITH YOUR EYES, SEE WITH YOUR EARS AND QUESTION WHAT ON EARTH IT IS THAT WE’RE IN SUCH A RUSH TO GET TO.”

CAROLINE MCGINN, TIME OUT ★★★★

Thanks to the work of Dan Fox for putting together the CD sleeve using Ana Rachel’s fabulous Living Structures designs we are really excited to announce that CDs are now on sale through our website for the glorious price of only £10 (+P&P) each. All proceeds go back into the company to support future runs of Cart Macabre and the development of Leviathan!

Thank you once again to everyone for all your support well done to all the cast and crew that made Cart Macabre at the Old Vic Tunnels such an exciting, high quality and successful experience!

The Carts are ready: tomorrow we premiere Cart Macabre at The Old Vic Tunnels !

In the midst of a very exciting few weeks of rehearsals our PR company have been doing a fantastic job of whipping the media into a frenzy about us. Tuesday just gone we had the Guardian shooting an Audio-Visual editorial piece that will be going up on their website www.guardian.co.uk (from today) and on Wednesday we did our first full rehearsal run with the added bonus [with absolutely no pressure at all...!] of having BBC 2′s ‘The Review Show’, hosted by Kirsty Wark, panelists and cameras in the audience gathering footage for a feature on Cart Macabre due to be aired tonight (3rd Dec 2010) at 11pm after Newsnight.

To top it all off we are bracing ourselves for a series of press nights over the next few days to which all the major national papers are represented as well as some international press but the cherry on the cake really has to be our wonderful Winnie at Inshoku, a delicious Japanese and Oriental Restaurant in Lower Marsh Market, agreeing to feed us all lovely food for the duration of the run at a very good price – so hurrah and thank you to Winny, Martha and Sue!

Due to the fact that the entire run sold out within a week and a half of public release we have had to add 4 extra shows which will be all at 10pm on Saturday the 4th and Sunday the 5th / 12th & 19th. These have gone on sale through the Old Vic box office from today (3rd Dec 2010) so hurry if you would like a ticket!

Thank you to everyone who has supported us over the years of development we look forward to seeing you and hearing your feed back about your experience in the Cart Macabre!

Living Structures X
