“’CART MACABRE’ IS UNIQUE – LIKE BEING A HUMAN PIECE SHAKEN AROUND A GIANT KALEIDOSCOPE”

Caroline McGinn, Time Out ★★★★

Cart Macabre is a nightmare fairground ride through a dreamlike landscape. It’s a restless exploration of isolation and disorientation, an act of faith on the part of the audience.  In total darkness, 32 people are shepherded into eight wooden carts and moved through a succession of theatrical environments. The carts – their smell, their sounds, the sensation of their movement – become an inseparable part of a multi-sensory experience.

“WE ARE TOSSED ON A CREAKING SEA, HAUNTED BY A FRAGILE HEART, MOVED BY DISTANT SINGING …. LIVING STRUCTURES’ INSTALLATION-CUM-DRAMA RESONATES ACCURATELY WITH DARK JUNGIAN DREAMS, UNTIL EVEN ITS RICKETY MAKESHIFT QUALITY ADDS TO THE SENSE OF VULNERABILITY.”

Libby Purves: The Times ★★★★

Throughout this journey, a narrative begins to unfold, revealed to the audience through the architecture of the performance space – peepholes, shutters and sliding doors. Images appear out of blackness, reminiscent of the sea, faded glories, death, decay and the purgatory of waiting and wondering.

“Cart Macabre is a complex choreography in which the space  dances with the audience. a ‘Dance Macabre’ celebrating the transitory nature of life.”

(Klaus Kruse, Artistic Director)

“ IN THIS JOURNEY THROUGH THE UNDERWORLD, YOU FEEL BOTH TERRIFYINGLY POWERLESS AND UNEXPECTEDLY LIBERATED.”

Charles Spencer, The Telegraph ★★★★

“IMPRACTICAL AND A BIT NUTS, BUT LOVELY”

Libby Purves: The Times ★★★★

“VERITY STANDEN’S LUSCIOUSLY ARRANGED A CAPELLA MUSIC IS ONE OF THE WONDERS OF A TRIP WHICH MAKES YOU LISTEN WITH YOUR EYES, SEE WITH YOUR EARS AND QUESTION WHAT ON EARTH IT IS THAT WE’RE IN SUCH A RUSH TO GET TO.”

Caroline McGinn, Time Out ★★★★

“YOUR OWN STABILITY AND FIRMNESS, YOUR ORIENTATION, IS HERE DISSOLVED. RATHER YOU SIT SUSPENDED IN SPACE, BLURRY AND ILL-DEFINED. THE SELF-AWARENESS, THE DEFINITE FEELING OF PRESENCE, IS JUST AS STRONG, BUT IT IS NOT SO DEFINED BY PHYSICAL EXISTENCE. YOU LOSE SIGHT OF YOUR SKIN. YOUR EDGES DISAPPEAR.”

Matt Trueman, Carousel of Fantasies

“A JOURNEY INTO THE HEART OF DARKNESS, THE STORM-TOSSED OCEANS OF SLEEP AND PERHAPS EVEN INTO DEATH ITSELF”

Lyn Gardner, The Guardian

“THERE’S SO MUCH TO SEE IN EVERY DIRECTION.”

Emma Lowe, The Independent

“(…) A UNIQUE CONCEPT…NUDGES YOU OUT OF THE COMFORT ZONE AND SOMEWHERE ELSE ENTIRELY”

Franco Milazzo, The Londonist

“ALWAYS NERVE-TINGLING AS THE UNEXPECTEDNESS OF SO MUCH THAT HAPPENS NEVER REALLY DISSIPATES”

There Ought To Be Clowns

“A MULTI-SENSUAL EXPERIENCE WHICH IS MESMERISING, GROTESQUE AND THRILLING. THERE ARE MOMENTS WHICH MAKE YOU WANT TO REACH OUT AND ABSORB WHAT’S IN FRONT OF YOUR WITH YOUR HANDS, WHILST OTHER TIMES YOU’RE REPULSED.”

Jake Orr: A Younger Theatre

“IT IS GREAT TO SEE SHADOW PUPPETRY, ANIMATION AND A THEATRE-OF-OBJECTS INTEGRATED SO BEAUTIFULLY WITH PHYSICAL PERFORMANCE, SITE, AND MUSIC.”

Dorothy Max Prior, Animations Online

“THRILLING, EXCITING, PROVOCATIVE, SICKENING, CHALLENGING, WONDROUS… AN EXPERIENCE TO BE SAVOURED”

Terry O’Donovan, Total Theatre

“ONE WOULD NEED AN IRON CONSTITUTION NOT TO LEAVE THE EXPERIENCE MORE THAN A LITTLE SHAKEN”

Rob Epstein, The Independent on Sunday
